Profile
Prof. Dr. Dieter Naber is a German Professor of Psychiatry and prior Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Hamburg, Germany. His special expertise is the psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment of adult mental health conditions.
After his medical training in Germany, he joined the psychiatric University Hospital in Munich and received a distinguished fellowship to work as a researcher and clinician in the US. Upon completion of his clinical and scientific qualifications, he was appointed as director of the psychiatric clinic of Hamburg University.
In his research and clinical practice he focuses on the patient preferences, the informed selection of therapeutic options, close patient contact and the maintenance of a high quality of life during treatment
Professional Education
Prof. Dr. Naber attended German medical school at the University of Göttingen from 1968 to 1971, and at the University of Bonn from 1971 to 1974, followed by an internship in Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Biochemistry from 1974 to 1975.
He became a board-certified psychiatrist in 1986, completed psychotherapeutic training in 1989, and attained associate professorship in 1992. From 1977 to 1995, he worked as clinician and researcher at the Department of Psychiatry at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich.
From 1978-1980 and 1984-1985 he was invited as a distinguished scientist with German and American scholarships to work in basic and clinical research at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, USA.
In 1995, he was appointed as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Hamburg (150 beds, 60 day clinic places, 9000 outpatients). Due to the German age limit, Prof. D. Naber retired from his position in 2015. As Professor emeritus he continues his clinical work in private practice and his research at the UKE.
Professional achievements
Professor Naber won national and international prices and is a member of several professional organisations, including the Collegium Internationale Neuropsychopharmacologicum (CINP) and the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP).
He has published over 600 papers, 335 of which are listed in PubMed, as well as 140 book chapters and 28 books. His Hirsch Index, a measure of scientific excellence is 60, which characterizes him as a highly productive and influential scientist. He is a frequent lecturer in national and international conferences, serves on a number of editorial and advisory boards, and acts as a reviewer for numerous international journals.
His research expertise includes biological psychiatry, long-term outcomes of neuroleptic treatment, subjective effects of neuroleptics, quality of life in psychiatric patients, adherence and therapeutic alliance. Clinically he is a prominent leader in patient oriented medicine, respecting patients’ individual perspectives on disease and treatment in the context of their life situation.
