What are Neuromuscular Diseases?

Neuromuscular diseases are rare diseases across all age groups, which can be hereditary or acquired, involving skeletal muscles or peripheral nerves with possible involvement of other organs and a great diversity in appearance. Common symptoms are loss of muscle function, loss of mobility, frequently resulting in severe disability and limited life expectancy. There is a high unmet need for highly specialised care, and patients frequently endure a long latency until adequate diagnosis and therapy are confirmed. For more than 30 years, Prof. Walter has broad experience in treating patients with neuromuscular diseases from all over the world, with a focus on novel research developments.

Neurological Research and Awards

In 2014, she was honoured with the “Felix-Jerusalem Award” by the German Society of Muscle Diseases (DGM) for her project “Dystrophin-deficient pigs provide new insights into the hierarchy of physiological derangements of dystrophic muscle“. The newly developed large animal model DMDpig offers the possibility to systematically improve new gene-based therapies for DMD; hopefully, this will beneficial in the development of novel therapies for other rare diseases as well. Recently, it was shown in the DMDpig model that gene scissors are effective in permanently correcting the gene defect in Duchenne (Moretti A. et al. Somatic gene editing ameliorates skeletal and cardiac muscle failure in pig and human models of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Nature Medicine, 27 January 2020).

Prof. Walter has authored numerous book chapters, more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=walter-mc, regularly talks on neuromuscular diseases at international conferences, is part of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Medicine, and has run more than 10 clinical trials in different types of neuromuscular diseases.

Her collaborative efforts as the coordinator of the German Muscular Dystrophy Network (MD-NET), co-coordinator of the German Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy Network (CMT-NET), and member of the executive committee of TREAT-NMD, an European Network of Excellence for translational research in neuromuscular diseases, further demonstrate her leadership in neuromuscular care.
