
MS and Insomnia: 22% of Multiple Sclerosis Patients Affected
So far insomnia and the impact on quality of life was not in the focus of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) researcher. Now researchers from Portugal released a multicenter, hospital-based cross-sectional study that came up with surprising results.
22.3% of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients fulfilled the criteria for CID (chronic insomnia disorder). Factors for insomnia were female sex, anxiety, depression, fatigue, medical comorbidities.
Insomnia had a significantly negative effect on quality of life of MS sufferers.
Take-home message for patients and doctors: watch out for signs of insomnia and treat it accordingly to minimize the negative effect on quality of life.
