You can feel out of control and desperate to help resolve the situation. It may be that you suspect something is going on but your child isn\u2019t willing (or able) to talk about it and what\u2019s more, because the nature of bullying has changed so much over the years it can be hard to spot the signs or relate the situation to what you think of as bullying from your own childhood.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Listen to the podcast<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/348226186&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;show_teaser=true&amp;visual=true\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Some things to look out for include:<\/h2>\n<p>\u2022 Does he\/she show any signs of physical abuse e.g. bruises?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Are there changes in eating habits? Not just losing weight or eating less, but also eating more than usual.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Changes in sleeping patterns, e.g. over sleeping or disrupted sleep\/insomnia.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Worrying about school or showing reluctance to go to school.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Complaining of physical pain e.g. headaches, stomach aches, or tiredness.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Loss of items or broken possessions.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Bed wetting.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Showing a drop in academic performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Behavioural changes, are they becoming more aggressive or more passive at home, engaging in risky behaviors?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Is your child\/teen is becoming withdrawn or sad, for example, avoiding social events, talking less or becoming a loner?<\/p>\n<h2>If you do find out your child is being bullied here\u2019s what to do:<\/h2>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Stay calm and listen without showing judgment, or getting angry\/upset. It can be hard to accept, but remember bullying is part of human interactions, so you don\u2019t want to over react and amplify the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Don\u2019t hijack your child\u2019s problem, as you will foster dependence. Let your child take charge of the bullying by asking them how they think you can help them resolve this problem. Give them the power to make a change for themselves by giving support, not taking over.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Reassure them by explaining that bullying is about the bully having a problem not themselves. Discuss how some people will say or do nasty things because they want a certain reaction. Make it clear to your child that they have the power not to show the bully that they care or that they are bothered, and most of the time they will just go away.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Go through the steps he\/she can take on their own before, mum or dad step in. Assure them that you are there for them and that you will help them find a solution that they are happy with to stop the bullying. You are teaching resilience and independence, which results in more confidence and higher self-esteem.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Give them examples of famous people who were bullied as children or teens, such as Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Kate Winslet, Prince Harry, Jessica Alba, and Tom Cruise. Tell them it is not their fault, and they have done nothing to deserve it and it\u2019s not about being weak, just as being a bully isn\u2019t about been strong.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Avoid charging into the school to see the teacher\/admin staff or the bully\u2019s parents.
