This new study is one of the first to show that the most common types of headache (NMH, non-migrainous headache) are an independent risk factor for stroke. This is surprising as the focus was on migraine so far.<\/em><\/p>\n

The researchers at the University of Montpellier, France, investigated 1,919 elderly people over a period of 12 years.<\/p>\n

The Findings<\/h2>\n

Common headache sufferers (NMH, non-migrainous headache) were twice as likely to have a stroke compared to patients without any headache. 6.2% suffered from stroke.<\/p>\n

Migraine suffers were less likely to suffer from stroke compared to patients without any headache. 6.2% suffered from stroke. 1.9% vs 3.6%.<\/p>\n

The Conclusions<\/h2>\n

The authors say: \u201cThis study is one of the first to suggest that late-life NMH rather than migraine could be an independent risk factor for stroke and a warning sign.\u201d<\/p>\n

Future research is needed to investigate the stroke risk depending on the different types of headache.<\/p>\n
