Women with depression are less likely (up to 38%) to become pregnant researchers at the University of Boston found. Interestingly the use of antidepressants does not harm fertility.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Study<\/h2>\n

The study included more than 2,100 females between 21-45 years. Depression and use of psychotropic medication was assessed by questionnaires. These findings were associated with the probability of conception in a given menstrual cycle. The study was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology<\/em><\/p>\n

The Results<\/h2>\n

The probability of conception was decreased by 38% if a woman is suffering from severe depressive symptoms. 10.3% of the participants were using psychotropic drugs which didn\u2019t had a negative impact.<\/p>\n

The Conclusion<\/h2>\n

Depression should be considered as a possible cause for delayed conception. Depression is a very common and treatable condition.<\/p>\n

“Our findings suggest that moderate to severe depressive symptoms, regardless of current psychotropic medication treatment, may delay conception.” The authors of the study said.<\/p>\n

Why and how depression is influencing the conception is still not clear and needs further investigation. Most probably the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis will play an important role.<\/p>\n
