Patients suffering from Migraine with aura are more than twice as likely to have a stroke, researchers said at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2016.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Study<\/h2>\n

Researchers presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2016 data from a huge study including 12,844 participants over a period of 25 years.<\/p>\n

The Results<\/h2>\n

Out of the 12,844 participants 817 suffered from stroke. Among these the patients with migraine with aura wore 2.4 times more likely to have a stroke, compared to the ones not suffering from aura migraine. Moreover strokes linked to migraine affect younger people compared to typical strokes.<\/p>\n

The link between migraine and stroke seems to be the affection of blood vessels in the brain and leading to the brain. However, further research is needed to explain exactly what is happening.<\/p>\n

“If you get migraines with aura, make sure your stroke risk factors are assessed by your doctor,” said Souvik Sen, M.D., M.P.H., study author, University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina.<\/p>\n
