The Study<\/h2>\n

Researchers from the University College London tried to find the answer. They conducted a prospective, community-based cohort study that included 558 people with recurrent unprovoked seizures. 34% of the participants died during 25 years of follow-up.<\/p>\n

The Results<\/h2>\n

Most common not-epilepsy-related causes of death (60% of deaths):<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Stroke and other cerebrovascular disease<\/p>\n

\u2022 Heart attack and other cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Tumor (noncerebral neoplasm)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Most common epilepsy-related causes of death (23% of deaths):<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (3%)<\/p>\n

Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is likely the most common disease-related cause of death in with epilepsy. It\u2019s more likely that the cause of death is related to epilepsy if the death occurs in the first 2 years after the first seizure.<\/p>\n

Other diseases that increase the risk of premature death in epilepsy<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Tumor (primary cerebral and noncerebral neoplasm)<\/p>\n

\u2022 Certain neurologic diseases<\/p>\n

\u2022 Substance abuse<\/p>\n

The conclusion<\/h2>\n

\u201cComorbid diseases are important causes of death, as well as predictors of premature mortality in epilepsy. There is an especially strong relationship between cause of death and epilepsy etiology in the first 2 years after the index seizure. Addressing these issues may help stem the tide of premature mortality in epilepsy.\u201d The researchers say.<\/p>\n
