The often disabling disease of the central nervous system struck her aged just 23. \u201cInstinctively I felt like it meant my life was over, because there\u2019s no other conclusion with that kind of diagnosis,\u201d says Marhoon as she recalls the day of the diagnosis. Five years on, though, that initial despair has given way to renewed determination to help other sufferers in Dubai come to terms with their condition.<\/p>\n<p>Marhoon has set up MS Talks, an open forum where newly diagnosed sufferers and those already living with multiple sclerosis can learn about the condition, and meet others. In conjunction with the <strong>German Neuroscience Center<\/strong>, the first event takes place on Saturday October 31, and she hopes it will become a regular event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s very cultural in this part of the world not to talk about negative things. Look at things like autism and diabetes, 15 to 20 years ago people didn\u2019t really want to discuss things like that, and if we\u2019re ever going to get there with something like multiple sclerosis then we have to start somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <strong>German Neuroscience Center<\/strong>, in Healthcare City, there are around 2,000 to 3,000 multiple sclerosis sufferers in the UAE, and Marhoon hopes to share what she\u2019s learnt on her journey with as many of them as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to the multiple sclerosis Society in the UK, and came back with a bunch of brochures and just started reading,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen you speak to hospitals you get a medical explanation. I want to help give people the human information, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marhoon has had to make adjustments in her day to day, but she still continues to live a normal life, and reveals that her diagnosis has made her make changes for the better. \u201cI want to get the message out there that being diagnosed with this isn\u2019t something that has to rule your life. This has forced me to take a step and look at what\u2019s best for me in every choice that I make, be it food, career or people I surround myself with,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s not about the disease, but elevating the quality of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Free. For sufferers, the severe tiredness can be one of the most difficult daily symptoms to handle.<\/p>\n<h3>Age<\/h3>\n<p>The disease can be debilitating, but MS is not an \u201cold person\u2019s disease\u201d. It commonly affects young people and is frequently diagnosed in people aged 20 to 40. The average onset age is between the ages of 28 and 31.<\/p>\n<h3>Vitamin D<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s growing evidence to suggest people who are exposed to greater amounts of sunlight tend to have higher levels of vitamin D, which may help protect against immune-mediated diseases such as MS.<\/p>\n<h3>Pets<\/h3>\n<p>It was previously thought that canine distemper, a virus carried by dogs, could cause MS.
