Players of all ages \u2013 especially the young at heart \u2013 are invited to take part in the tournament at Dubai Festival City Mall on 11th and 12th September to help raise awareness of the condition.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day event, in conjunction with the <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>German Neuroscience Center<\/strong><\/span>, aims to highlight the link between table tennis and brain health in the run up to Word Alzheimer\u2019s Day on 21st September.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;16377&#8243; border_color=&#8221;grey&#8221; img_link_target=&#8221;_blank&#8221; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; img_link=&#8221;http:\/\/www.dubaiweek.ae\/going-out\/2930\/this-week-free-table-tennis-tournament-to-raise-awareness-of-alzheimers\/&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Expat Desiree Vlekken founded 4get-me-not Alzheimer\u2019s after her father was diagnosed with the devastating condition. She expects to welcome more than 400 players and spectators to the event, from beginners to professional table tennis players. They will have the chance to win prizes and take part in on-site memory tests based on the Mini-Mental State Examination, which is used to screen for dementia.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Derk Krieger, from <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>German Neuroscience Center<\/strong><\/span>, said although nothing can yet reverse Alzheimer\u2019s, but keeping fit could help stave if off. \u201cBeing physically active can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of people with dementia and table tennis is a fantastic low-to-medium impact exercise that requires the brain to be constantly engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To register for the tournament, email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:info@4get-me-not.org\">info@4get-me-not.org<\/a>\u00a0or visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dubaiweek.ae\/going-out\/2930\/this-week-free-table-tennis-tournament-to-raise-awareness-of-alzheimers\/www.4get-me-not.org\">www.4get-me-not.org<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What is Alzheimer&#8217;s?<\/h2>\n<p>Alzheimer\u2019s disease is most commonly associated with elderly people however, five per cent of people with the disease suffer from early onset Alzheimer\u2019s, which can affect patients in their 40s and 50s. Alzheimer\u2019s is the most common form of dementia and a neurological disorder, which causes deterioration of memory, loss of concentration and diminished judgement.
